Ultrasound is sound waves with frequencies higher than the upper audible limit of human hearing. Ultrasound is not different from “normal” sound in its physical properties, except that humans cannot hear it. This limit varies from person to person and is approximately 20 kilohertz in healthy young adults. Uses of ultrasound test like ultrasound images have many uses during pregnancy, Diagnostics, therapeutic applications, use during medical procedures.

Ultrasound Test is the technique in which high frequency sound waves are made to travel inside your body to capture the live images of internal organs. This technique is also called as Sonography, as it is the same technique that is used in the SONAR & Radar for ships. Like other imaging techniques use either invasive techniques or radiation, they become unsafe options for pregnant women. Therefore, ultrasound becomes the safest diagnostic tool for pregnant women for its non-invasiveness & radiation free technique.
Mostly it is associated with expectant mothers to get the pictures of their unborn babies, people who have swellings, pain or abnormalities in any of the internal organs as listed below:
• Bladder
• Brain in infants
• Blood Vessels
• Reproductive Organs
• Pancreas, Spleen
• Thyroid glands
Ultrasound Test helps in surgeon’s movements during procedures like Biopsies.
The overall procedure is considerably short. You should ask your doctor about your doubts if any, before the procedure. Your doctor may ask you about the medicines you take regularly or OTC drugs you are prescribed with. For abdominal organs like Pancreas, Spleen, Liver, etc., you may be told to eat fat-free meal the evening before you undergo the diagnosis and fast until the test.
For most of the ultrasound exams, you will be told to lay face-up on an exam table that can be tilted or moved.
After you take the desired position on the examination table, the radiologist or sonographer will apply a warm water-based gel to the area of the body under study. The gel will help the transducer make secure contact with the body and eliminate air gaps between the transducer and the skin which can block the sound waves from passing into your body. The transducer is placed on the body and moved over the area of interest until the desired images are captured.
There is no discomfort from pressure as the transducer is only pressed against the area being examined. However, if scanning is performed over an area of tenderness, you might feel some pressure or minor pain from the transducer.
Doppler sonography is also performed using the same transducer.
Young children may need to be sedated in rare cases in order to hold still for the procedure.
Once the process is complete, the ultrasound gel will be wiped off your skin. Any portions that are not wiped off will dry up quickly. With the help of the diagnosis, further results are deduced and a line of treatment is designed.
